Global Free Zones of the Future 2010/11

Over 700 economic zones globally were invited by Financial Times fDi Magazine to complete a survey requesting both qualitative and quantitative data regarding their economic zones. This list of 700 was reduced to 200 based on information collected by fDi Benchmark and information submitted by zones.

Foreign Direct Investment (fDi) Magazine, a premier publication
for the business of globalisation published by The Financial Times Ltd, released its first global ranking, Freezone of the Future 2010/11 this June.

These zones included free trade zones, special economic zones and country zones.

The information collected was set under nine categories:
  • Economic Potential
  • Cost Effectiveness
  • Facilities
  • Transportation
  • Incentives
  • Best Promotion
  • Airport
  • Port
  • Overall Description

A total of 66 zones submitted details regarding many aspects
of their zones and this was judged and scored by the independent judging panel.

Dubai Airport Freezone ranked 2nd in the world and 1st in
the Middle East by Financial Times fDi Magazine’s global ranking of freezones
Dubai Airport Freezone came in 1st position as the top freezone for the Middle East Region according to this year’s rankings and placed 2nd in the world overall.

In addition, Dubai Airport Freezone ranked 2nd globally in the category of “Best for FDI Promotion” and 2nd in the category of “Best Transportation Links”, testament to the zones standing as a leading free zone in both the Middle East and internationally.

Seven of the top 25 zones are located in the UAE
. Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone (WFTZ), the largest free trade zone in China, was recognized by fDi Magazine as the “Freezones of the Future 2010/11” in the rankings, which took over four months to compile.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman, Dubai Airport Freezone, reacting to this latest accolade garnered by the Freezone said: “We are delighted with this outstanding achievement of winning the top position in the Middle East and second place in the world.”

“This achievement will further encourage us to do much more for our international clients in terms of the quality of services and facilities we render,” added Sheikh Ahmed.
