Foreign visitors are an important part of the economy. Individuals and families visiting different countries often spend large amounts of money for the benefit of the economies.
The recession contributed to that fewer companies went on business trips, and fewer individuals chose to visit other countries.
However, it was the opposite in Sweden in 2009. Foreign visitors overnight stay increased by as much as 3.3 percent, which was an extremely positive response. Overnight stays at campsites increased by 6.1 percent and in the private homes and apartments, the increase was 4.4 percent. Increased marketing of the neighboring countries and a weak crone has contributed to a growing stream of foreign visitors.
In total 51.8 million overnight stays in the Swedish housing facilities in 2009 were generated. The Nordic markets increased by almost 12 percent. Poland and Italy were two other markets where tourism is increasing rapidly. In the rest of Europe the tourism decreased slightly.
Tourism contributes to a stronger economy and opportunities for businesses. The sectors that benefit are mainly the hotel and catering industry. Other industries that benefit from tourism include clothing, jewelry, museums and leisure activities.
Other positive aspects are that the tourists may get a positive perception of the country as a whole and thus become more aware of its products.
