Brazil’s government has authorized 81 projects for generating electricity from traditional and renewable sources including sugarcane waste.
These projects can now participate in a December 17 auction for supplying the national market starting in 2014, according to the state company EPE.
The projects will have a total of 19,198 MW of installed capacity, or 18% of current power demand. Most of the power – 15,015 MW – will come from thermal plants that burn natural gas and the rest from coal, hydro and sugarcane biomass, among other sources.
