Culture in the UAE - Dubai

At our event about establishing businesses in the Arab Emirates, Aziz Mariwani from Semantix spoke about the culture in the United Arab Emirates.

This is a culture that differs significantly from the one we
have in Sweden or in the other Nordic countries. What may seem obvious in our country may be perceived as rude in the United Arab Emirates.

Aziz Mariwani talked about the most important factors you
need to consider.

A great advice is not to shake hands with women unless the
woman takes the initiative to do so.

One should also not try to get too much attention, and this is particularly true if you're at a restaurant. To have a reserved behavior is appreciated, and do not beckon for service, they will notice you anyway.

Regarding freedom of speech you have to show respect and
think before you act.

It might be good to know that people in the United Arab Emirates
has a very good experience of different cultures which is not surprising since 80 percent of all residents in Dubai are from over 180 different countries.

People do not disturb each other, and it is easy to make contact
. Individuals are more open in this region than for example in Sweden and Scandinavia.

Religion is an important topic, and we must be aware and prepared for it. But there are no religious conflicts regardless of your religion, you are always welcomed.

In Europe we are accustomed to work Monday-Friday.
The schedule is different in the United Arab Emirates where the week starts on Sunday and ends on Thursday. This is something you will easily adapt to since it is natural for the rest of the population.

Aziz suggests contacting the embassy for further help and advice with respect to various concerns about the large and important area of culture. The embassy also has access to good literature about the area that you may read on the flight which takes more than 6 hours.

Finally, it should be mentioned that it is important to follow the
"Dress Code" that exists. If you attend business meetings wear a suit, shirt and a tie if you are a man and wear a dress and blouse if you are a woman. Obviously, it is less formal if you meet up as friends in a club or restaurant, but the important thing is that women should not wear short skirts.
