The proportion of Americans who believe that free trade agreements and compliance with the WTO rules are good for the United States has risen sharply in 2009.
Three major surveys conducted by Gallup, the New York Times / CBS and the PEW Center for Public Opinion all clearly shows increased support for international trade this year.
The phrasing in the various studies differ somewhat, but the trend of change is clear in all. What caused this change is not responded in the surveys but some theories from the PEW Center include: Presidential statements on protectionism as a threat to economic recovery. An increase in associated trade policies to Obama's administration with the following benefits;
The fact that the population see domestic reasons for the economic situation after the real estate and financial crisis, and now perceive global trade as a source of stability.
