TO SECURE NORDIC competitiveness in the global market, the Nordic Council of Ministers recently introduced major investments in joint research and innovation. The goal is to reach a leading global position in environmental technology and climate research. Research and educations ministers decided to invest SEK 480 million in 2009-2013.

THIS INVESTMENT WILL place Nordic countries in the frontline in climate and environment research as well as open up business and investment opportunities, says the Swedish Minister for Education and Science, Jan Björklund.

TO FACE FUTURE CHALLENGES, the Nordic research and education ministers consider joint solutions essential. The new cutting edge research program is designed as a joint Nordic platform. The cutting edge research initiative is split in three parts. It includes nanotechnology and energy efficiency, large scale wind power integration, sustainable bio energy, separation and storage of carbon dioxide.

THE CUTTING EDGE research initiative will be headed by a program board with members from the five Nordic countries. It will be launched at the Nordic Council of Ministers’ globalisation forum in Iceland in February 26-27, 2009.
