Increasing number of foreign
companies are established in Sweden

The number of foreign companies in Sweden continues to increase. In 2007 another 837 companies set up shop. By year end 2007, the total was 11 944 companies in the Swedish market owned by foreigners.


IN 2006-2007, 
Norway represented the largest number (1648) and increase (176) of foreign companies in Sweden. Luxembourg was second with an increase of 126 companies, followed by Cyprus with112 companies. This survey’s source is the Swedish Institute for Growth Policy Studies.

 

THE FOREIGN OWNED companies increased the number of employees by 40 000 people last year. This means that for the first time, there are more than 600 000 employees in foreign owned companies in Sweden, representing 24 percent of total employment in Swedish industry.

 

THE EU COUNTRIES dominate foreign ownership in Sweden by 61 percent of all employees in industry. Companies with US ownership has the largest number of employees in Sweden (relative to other foreign owned companies), corresponding to 17 percent of all employees in foreign owned companies.

 

IN 2006-2007, the number of service companies increased the most. This sector represents 76 percent and it also had the largest increase of employees. Last year, a little more than 41 000 people were employed by foreign owned service companies, mostly in business services and health care. This sector has 58 percent of all foreign owned company employees.
